The Importance of Literature in a World Ruled by Technology
Reading is my favorite thing to do! However, here’s something to think about:
Technology has become such a huge part of our lifestyle that it takes away time that could be spent doing other things like reading. Valuable time is lost because of how much time we spend scrolling through social media and/or browsing the internet. While this isn’t always necessarily a bad thing, when it consumes us, then we have to remind ourselves that technology isn’t everything.
I’m currently reading the Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt and I like how he includes several detailed graphs on how anxiety disorders have gone up over the past couple decades. It’s easy to think that our progression in technology has greatly influenced this.
Some fun facts about literature! One of the oldest known libraries was the one of Ashurbanipal in Mesopotamia, and the story of Gilgamesh is one of the oldest known stories. We have used the art of storytelling for centuries and it’s sad to think that some people might be forgetting the magic of storytelling because of technology.
While some people may think that classics by Charles Dickens, Mary Shelly, or Jane Austen aren’t relevant to today’s world, many lessons taught in those books are still applicable to our lives today.
If you’re looking to learn more about the impacts social media or just technology in general has on us today, I highly recommend the Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt! This author clearly spent a lot of time researching and planning his book, and I feel like I have already learned so much from just the first few chapters.
A friend of mine recently released his first single titled Tank! I enjoy listening to his music because of the powerful and obviously carefully chosen lyrics designed to create a fun and upbeat experience.
