Honoring Jane

Honoring Jane

I know that we are in the middle of our Halloween season, but I wanted to take a moment to honor Jane Goodall who passed away two weeks ago on October 1st.

Jane Goodall was known for her trail-blazing work with chimpanzees. She discovered many parallels between humans and chimps and became an advocate for the protection of wildlife. A program was later founded to help with the protection of endangered species.

She will be remembered for the work she did and the courage she had to face the world to speak about what she knew was right. She will be remembered for the lasting impact she had on the world of wildlife.

There are two books I wanted to mention that are great for learning more about Jane. One is a picture book for kids and the other is an autobiography told in letters that she sent from her childhood through adulthood.

I am Jane Goodall by Brad Meltzer-

This picture book contains memorable illustrations and easy-to-read writing that is perfect for the child interested in nature. It briefly goes over her childhood through her work she later did as an adult. I love this book because it beautifully tells Jane’s story in a child-friendly way.

Africa In My Blood by Jane Goodall-

If you’re looking for a more in-depth view on Jane’s life then this book is perfect. It contains letters that she wrote in her childhood full of child-like writing and misspellings, and later the more sophisticated letters that illustrate the work she did in an admirable way. The best part about this book is- it’s all Jane’s words.

Thank you, Jane Goodall, for the impact you left on us.
