Frankenstein: Lessons About Acceptance
One of my top favorite books to read around Halloween is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley! It was written in the 1800s and is classified as horror. However, Frankenstein is not as horrific as it seems.
The novel Frankenstein is about a creature created by a scientist (the scientist is the one named Frakenstein!) out of sources he had at hand. The result appeared to be something straight out of nightmares, something that immediately brought spine-tingling screams and chills. Many sought out the creature, simply aiming to capture and murder him.
This book makes me emotional because of the creature’s state of being. He has no understanding of the world around him and has never known happiness. Immediately after creation, the reaction of the public showed him the cruelty and coldness of the world.
The creature was neglected, mistreated, and rejected by society. Once a blameless soul, his only desire was to fit in and be accepted by society. It was beyond his capability of understanding that he couldn’t fit in, no matter how much he tried.
This is why Frankenstein, to me, is a sad story. It’s about the hate that humans show, and the acceptance that is so desired but sometimes never given.
This novel was written over two centuries ago, but the lessons that are taught are still applicable in today’s life and culture.
When I read Frankenstein, the lesson that stands out to me most is the one that teaches about the rebuke of society. The pain and suffering that it can inflict on someone is one that is flawlessly illustrated in this novel so bluntly that it brings me to tears every time.
If the creature was accepted- his story would’ve ended so differently.
